A Foolish war -- Protest Song: "I Don't Want To Be A Good Citizen"

by Keith Shugarts

Special to TLE

I was driving down, sober, towards the Florida Keys when one of the faceless propoganda patriots came on the radio and said that it was every good citizen's duty to support the war and stand behind the President. After having vented volumes of words that would curl the ear hair of the "bad word" censored populace, I began singing and this is what resulted - it is best sung as a combination Irish Drinking, Oi, Punk, Ska Reggae tune, or something like that.

(Warning - if you regularly listen to government controlled television, some of these words might sound rather new and strange to you, do not be afraid, they will not hurt you.)

I Don't Want To Be A Good Citizen

Tell me more lies you son of a bitch
About that fight for freedom that you need to itch
Your bumpersticker slogans of power and pride
Can you not tell the government has lied

With daily incursion into life and liberty
Pretty soon they'll be coming right after me
My words will be silenced, my liberty gone
Just so the Department of State can go one

Chorus:
I don't want to be
I don't want to be
I don't want to be a good citizen
I don't want to be
I don't want to be
I don't want to be a good citizen

Excuses you use to take rights from me
Inalienable ones like life and liberty
Your supposed to be controlled by 10 great rights
But you ignore them for this foolish fight

Now and axis of evil has spread round the world
Chased by your military all flags unfurled
While here in this country all in a tatter
Lays your controlling document but you say nothings the matter.

Chorus

From your citizens you steal the gold for this war
Given to you by your lackeys in the HOR
The myth of democracy now is more real
Liberty denied covered by patriotic zeal

The freedoms you've stolen you will not replace
The Constitution gone without a trace
You say you've looked at it and found yourself right
But all that you've got is aggression and might

Chorus

Bio: Keith took a little time off from writing to drive around, lounge around at some undisclosed and unprofileable location, and buy some tools to protect his liberty. He graduated with a degree in history from the College of Charleston - all the good that did what with his horrible grammer and spelling.
